New Ionising Radiation Regulations for Medical Applications

The Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations 2017, come into force on 6th February 2018 and replace and revoke The Ionising Radiations (Medical Exposure) Regulations 2000 and other subsequent amendments.

From 6 February, providers in England must ensure compliance with the requirements of new Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations. In particular, the Regulations address the radiation protection of persons undergoing medical exposure and non-medical imaging exposure using medical radiological equipment.

The new regulations follow a format similar to the 2000 regulations, however it includes requirements for a number of topics which were either partially addressed, or not addressed at all previously, mainly:

  • Licensing for nuclear medicine
  • Non-medical imaging using medical equipment
  • Medical physics experts
  • Communicating benefits and risks to patients
  • Amendment to definitions surrounding “much greater than intended”
